The UK maybe a nation of shopkeepers (or at least in Napoleonic times) but few of us are getting trained to do this kind of work – On average during 2017, just 5% of shopkeepers and proprietors stated that they had received job-related education/training in the ‘previous 13 weeks’ (i.e. prior to being interviewed) making them the least likely group of workers (for which data are available) to have received education/ training during any particular quarter of the year. By comparison, around one quarter (24%) of the workforce as a whole stated that they had received job-related education/training (in each of the four quarters of 2017) whilst reassuringly I think, amongst many of the medical professions 50% or more of the workforce stated this to be the case.
