One in seven (14%) tech specialists in the UK are non-UK nationals

Latest data from ONS shows that during the last quarter of 2017 there were an estimated 186,000 tech specialists in the UK with non-UK nationality (i.e. 14% of the total at that time). This was a higher proportion than that registered for the workforce as a whole (11%), amongst which, an estimated 3,563,000 people were non-UK nationals. The proportion of tech specialists that were non-UK nationals was however, well below that registered for many other occupations, notably ‘packers, bottlers, canners and fillers’ amongst whom, less than half (47%) had UK nationality. I also noted that, though the proportion of tech specialists that are EU nationals appears much the same as for workers as a whole (6% vs 7%), the proportion of tech specialists that were of Asian nationality was double that registered amongst the wider workforce (4% vs 2%).
