Women in Engineering

Sunday was international Women in Engineering day which inspired me to have a quick look at the state of the gender balance in related occupations over the 2014-18 period. The results – terrible – for each of the main engineering professions less than one sixth of workers were women, and overall, women accounted for only one in ten engineering professionals on average (10%) over the period – i.e. 43,000 all told from a total of 453,000 people. Another way of looking at it is to say that if the level of representation had been the same as within the wider economy (47%), there would have been another 170,000 women in engineering professional roles in the UK over the 2014-18 period!
